What are the pros and cons -- for scenery, cost, road conditions/ease of use and typical weather to expect?
Whew !! , That is a very long and slow drive. I feel weary from thinking about it. I did not drive a motor vehicle in Norway. I travelled across Norway : from Bergen to Oslo : by train, bus, boat, trains. There is a "Highway" across Norway, from Oslo to Bergen, (includes E16), but parts of it do not look like a highway. (L.O.L.). Why do you want to drive a motor vehicle from Oslo to Bergen ? Norway has wonderful public transportation : trains, busses, boats. I think the best travel guide book on Norway is "THE ROUGH GUIDE TO NORWAY" written and researched by Phil Lee. (fourth edition, 2006). And the book "Rick Steves' SCANDINAVIA" has a good description of the "Norway in a Nutshell" fjord trip.
When I did that I stopped for a night at Aurland. I like Aurland. I went in a bus on the E16 road from Voss to Gudvangen, and from Aurland to Flam. Good busses. The busses have a big baggage compartment.
Norwegian people are wonderful ! If you want more talk from me, send Private Message to me
Take the train!! Much less stressful and you will enjoy the scenery --- use the Norway in a Nutshell plan from Rick Steves......ENJOY!
