do I drive from Bergen to Balestrand and then take day boat trips in fjords, or do I take expressboat and then rent a car for 1 day and drive up to Nigard Glacier? There are 4 adults. Looked into renting a car in Balestrand and then driving back to Bergen with drop off but it was very expensive (over $600). Renting the car in Bergen and driving is only about $300 but I don't know what the expressboat costs are for comparison. What is the drive like from Bergen to Balestrand?

We drove from Bergen to Balestrand via Voss. Voss is a town with lots of shops and is situated on a lake. It might make a better base than Balestrand which is a very small village. We enjoyed our stay at Kvikne's Hotel, but didn't find much to do in Balestrand. We spent two nights in Voss, than drove to Vik with a detour to Flam where we took the train RT. Vik has an interesting old stave church and an old stone church and is near the ferry to Balestrand. The drive from Voss to Vik was very scenic - waterfalls everywhere in June.
