We will be in London for 6 days in October. Our last day we would like to see WIndsor Castle and Stonehenge. We are considering renting a car at Heathrow for the day to see both and then return the car to Heathrow and flying out from there. Wondering about ease of driving about parking at these sights? Thanks for any suggestions.
Don
We had no problems with parking at either place. My suggestion is to take a morning from London to see Windsor via train, very easy. Can do all of it within maybe four hours for train and visiting. Then a tour from London to Stonehenge, might be cheaper and less stressful, in my opinion.
I, too, would take the train to Windsor. It is MUCH easier! Maybe you could rent a car in Slough and drive from there? Does anyone think that is a reasonable suggestion?
Unlike the PP, every time I went to Windsor by car I had the devil's own time trying to park there. Maybe I've always been unlucky.
Maybe just beginners luck but we found a parking lot we think was by the train station and had no problem parking at Windsor and I think it was only fifteen minute walk to castle. But I still like the idea of train to Windsor some morning and then if you want to see Stonehenge on your last day, rent the car at Heathrow, drive to Bath, Wells (lovely place) and Stonehenge and then back to Heathrow. That to me would be a lovely day, long but worth it. Stay at airport last night before fly home.
I have driven there a few times and once had a bit of trouble parking, but after about 10 minutes found a spot...and although I love exploring with a car, if these are your only two destinations I would make it easy and take a tour or a train. Now, if you want to do some exploring on your own, then get a car.
Windsor- train is so easy, dont bother with a car. We definitely found parking to be difficult on the (very) few times we drove. Also the motorway can be a pain. Stonehenge a car would be a great help, you can also swing by Avebury if you have time. I really would not recommend trying to do Stonehenge and Windsor on the same day. Windsor neeeds a long half day- and then its a fairly long haul to Stonehenge. The practical way would be to spend a day-train to salisbury, time to see the cathedral, car to Stonehenge and Avebury and a little bit of country sightseeing, train back to London- this should take you a full day
I would take the train from Paddington station in London to Windsor, it's a 35 minute train ride. The train station is a 3 minute walk to Windsor Castle. From Windsor you could take a taxi to pick up a car, which would be a 15 minute ride. Have fun!!
