we are planning our trip to Englandwill be following most of Rick Steve's 14 tour of EnglandDRIVING from Bath to Stow on the Wold, to Stratford upon Avon, to Keswick to York where can i find a GOOD/GREAT driving map before i get thereor do i need to wait until we arrive and get local maps along the way? I am trying to find some out of way places (from our family history sites) and thought if I had a map now, I could locate and plan our driving daysthanks for your help
We have enjoyed several driving trips in England. Before we go we buy both the AA road atlas of the United Kingdom and Michelin maps for the area which we are visiting. Both have a scale of about 4 miles to the inch and both indicate lots of historic and nature sites. You can buy both from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk
Karen , In fall of 2010 we spent a month driving through britain and as per rick's advice purchased ordinance survey maps of three areas ( scotland ; cornwall ; and the cotswolds ) in addition to a complete atlas of the isles . getting a good atlas here should be easy ( i.e. michelin ) but the ordinance survey maps provided a level of detail that was really wonderful . you can buy them over there in most bookstores but if you want them ahead of time you could probably get them from amazon uk or another online seller , In any event , don't go withount them .P.S. you want the " TOUR" maps , blue and grey cover since they produce different versions. Have a great trip.
The AA Atlas is great for coverage of the UK road system and the Ordnance Survey is the best for detail of specific areas. And the good news is that you can now download them for free! Go to http://www.magazine.ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk/magazine/tscontent/editorials/getamap/os-getamap-home.html or Google Ordnance Survey. The OS maps are incredibly detailed and show footpaths, trails, historic sites, individual buildings etc.
thanks for all of your help I purchased an AA Great Britain atlas from Amazon to start figuring out our driving days and will get the Ordinance maps when we get "in country"!!
Beyond excited!
We stopped at the first Welcome Rest (or maybe Welcome Stop) we came to on the motorway out of London. We bought a great OS atlas that served us well. Our GPS was also our best friend.
