Driving Liverpool to Highlands

Good evening all.   I'm currently considering cancelling a couple hotel reservations on our itinerary and "flying by the seat of our pants" for a couple nights.   We'd pick up the car in Liverpool then drive up to and through the Lake district for a day, then sleep in either Keswick or a bit north from there depending on how much time we spend in LD (suggestions for places to stop welcome). The second day would then be spent driving up toward Oban.   Is that too much to try and take on in a couple days of driving? I know we could certainly spend more time in the Lake District, but we have a B&B reservation in the highlands I want to keep so we can get out to Skye.
Any ideas welcome!

Liverpool to Keswick would be a good choice. This would leave time to enjoy the area for most of the day and one evening. Are you going direct from there to Oban for your next night's stay? That is quite a drive and you will be passing by a lot of interesting sights en route. Will you be spending a few nights in Oban and then on to Skye? If not - why stop in? IMHO This is too much to take on in a couple days of driving. We stayed 2 nights in Keswick, 2 nights at Hadrian's Wall, 1 night in Kilmarnock, 2 nights in Oban and then 2 nights in Portree, Isle of Skye. This gave us lots of time to see the sights in each area. Good travels!

Hey Bob, thanks for the reply. Here is how I currently have it structured . 1 Sleep in Liverpool 2 Open 3 Open 4 Sleep in Drynachan (S. of Loch Ness, near where A82 and A87 intersect) 5 Sleep in Drynachan . I don't want to cancel the B&B on 4 and 5 as it's in a central spot between Skye and Inverness. The original plan was to get up early the morning after the first night at Drynachan to spend the day on Skye. Then after the second night we'd make a quick stop near Inverness (family heritage stuff) before heading down to Edinburgh. Then down to Hardrian's Wall, Durham, York and on to London. This all spans several days. . I was able to cancel the room on #2 but #3 we still have an uncancellable room in Glasgow. I'm fine witth eating the $100 if we can squeeze in a better experience somehow. . We for sure want to drive through Loch Lomond and originally were just going to go down through Glencoe as well as some other sights along the way, skipping Oban alltogether. . If it is too much to drive Keswick to Oban that next day, would there be some other sights in the region north of the Lake District on the way to Glasgow that would be of interest, and then stick to the original idea? There just isn't much in Glasgow we're interested in to spend a whole day there. .
Wow, now that I wrote a book... :)

You should drive thru Blackpool...just for a contrast to the scenic beauty of the Lake District. By the way...some friends just came back from a month in Scotland and they ran into groups of traveling Chinese (evidently they have the travel bug and lots of money now)...so they reccomend avoiding the obvious "tourist" sites if you don't want a crowd. Also...watch for some of the sites in Scotland starting to close for the season.

1 Sleep in Liverpool. 2 Sleep in Keswick. Drive north into Scotland and then head west to visit Culzean Castle and then the Robert Burns Centre. 3 Sleep in Ayr (take an evening stroll along the seaside promenade). Drive thru Glasgow and on to brief stops at Loch Lomond and Glencoe. 4 Sleep in Drynachan
Early start for a visit to Isle of Skye (Eileen Donan Castle, too?). 5 Sleep in Drynachan Early start for a brief visit to lovely Inverness, head to Culloden battlefield and then south to Edinburgh. This is quite doable but you will have full days with early starts. The distances are not far in mileage but there is so much to see along the way. Save Oban for another time when you can visit Mull & Iona. We've been to Scotland twice (will be going again in 2013), rent a car each time and like the freedom of stopping whenever we like (my wife is into photography). Enjoy your trip, Bob

Alex, A couple of years ago we stayed at Ashtree House in Keswick and we found them thru the TI. We really enjoyed our stay there. Nice people, nice breakfast, our room was really cute and all only 10 minutes from town.
