I don't have much information other than to say I did it in 2000. The section of highway along the east coast was not paved and very rough, but it may be paved now. Otherwise it was very easy driving. We spent the night at Lake Myvatn, Egilsstadir and Skaftafell National Park along the way.
I drove the entire Ring Road in Iceland last month. What do you want to know specifically?
It is still unpaved in the east. The gravel road is 1 1/2 lanes so when two cars approach each other, it's a little tricky. There's some very steep grades on the gravel as well.
It's mostly flat in south and there's a lot of hilly driving in the north. The closer you are to Reykjavik, the better the road quality is. The highway from Keflavik airport to Reykjavik is identical to a major American interstate. The rest of the time, you're on 2 lane roads.
Driving in the interior is a whole different game. I didn't do that as the roads are only open in July and August.
