Driving from North Wales to London

We're travelling to the UK June/July and after 5 days in Wales, we're driving to London. I've driven London to Mid/South-Wales before, but this drive from North Wales to London will be newer and want opinions on what to avoid (big city traffic in Birmingham?) and best scenic roads...through Shrewsbury...Hereford...Worcester? We've planned for a night stop somewhere in between and thought Cotswolds area a logical stop (to wake up and walk around before the last leg into London). Or...would staying somewhere else be better?

Have you seen all of Edwards Castles? Beaumaris is worth a side trip on Anglesey. Conway to Chester is an easy drive. You can then pick a number of ways south from there. Depending on your interests. The Industrial Revolution with historic factories, iron bridges and trains? Fairies and Book Fairs ? Antiques and the Potteries? Just check the web for interesting itineraries. I found the main road system to be surprisingly modern. There are also roads thru Snowdonia...beware of hairpin turns and sheep. The Cotswolds is charming but don't leave Wales too soon. Blenhiem Palace in Woodstock is a nice stop before London.

Have you tried RAC route planner? If you put in where you are coming from and where you want to go, it will plan a route, avoiding the motorway if that's what you want. I would be inclined to drive the A5 out of North Wales, lovely scenery, and then overnight Ludlow, although you may have been there before, or like you say the Cotswolds.
