We will be driving from London to Swansea this summer. Are there any nice and worthwhile stops on the way? I would so love to visit the Cotswolds. Would that be too much of a hassle and too far?
Thank you.
Negin, the M4 motorway connects London with south Wales. At about 190 miles, it's not that long a trip at motorway speeds. Of course, it's the opposite of scenic meandering. There are plenty of other roads that offer that. What you can see depends, of course, on how long you want to take getting to Wales. The Cotswolds are a bit north of the London-Wales line. I wouldn't really recommend trying to make a mad dash up there on a drive to Wales. If you can stay overnight, of course, it's a different matter.
Cotswolds are reasonably close to the motorway. Especially if you can stop for at least two nights. (I would get off near Swindon/briad Blusdon from there to fairford which is on the edge of the Cotswolds- greta church)You should get off the motorway for the scenery of course. Places i would look for are Symonds yat (overlooking the Wye valley) and Tintern Abbey ruins. When you get to wales you can always try the coastal road via porthcawl for a different scenery. A couple of ruined castles in and near Bridgend
Thanks so much, j.c..
Yes, it's too bad for us in a way. I wish we had more time and could spend at least one night in the Cotswolds. We'll be traveling with 2 kids - and although they're not that young - we don't want to take forever to get to Swansea. Brian, thank you also. I wish we could do this. Unfortunately, our time is a bit limited. I almost wish that we were spending a bit less time in London and more time in the Cotswolds and Wales. Might try the coastal road via Porthcawl and the Bridgend route. I grew up in Swansea MANY years ago, so I really should know this. But I was a child and obviously wasn't driving. :-)
You can fit in a drive through part of the Cotswolds and have lunch there. The Eight Bells in Chipping Campden is good. Or find a nice pub anyplace along the route. Go via Oxford, Chipping Norton, Stow-on-the-Wold, Broadway. Then head over to the M5 South to the M4 West to Swansea. Probably 5 hours or so drive time not counting sightseeing.
Tex, thank you for that. May consider it.
Hi Negin, a visit to Chepstow castle in Wales just over the Severn bridge would be a nice detour. It was started in 1067 and although a ruin it is still a magnificent castle and the surrounding Wye valley is beautiful. Plan on the drive taking 5 hours, maybe more if it is on a Friday afternoon or you hit rush hour 5-7pm. The traffic can be heavy from just over the bridge as far as Newport. Look out for the Celtic Manor resort next to the motorway where they had the Ryder cup last September and the traffic should free up somewhat from there. You can't miss it is has a huge welsh flag flying! Cheers
Steve.
Thank you so much.
