Has anyone over age 70 run into problems renting cars in Europe? We hear that in some countries - or perhaps with certain agencies - "Old" folks are not permitted to drive rental cars. Please tell us that it's not true!

Yes. This can be an issue. We were renting with a local company on Orkney my Dad was not able to drive as he was to old. It has to do with the company's insurance. Fortunately, I was young enough to drive. So you need to check on this if you are renting. The company in Orkney didn't realize until they saw my Dad's license that he was too old. Pam
Rick Steves addresses this on the "Plan Your Trip" link above: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/carrental.htm (Scroll down to "Age Limits")
I notice restrictions on anyone over 70 renting a car. But I have rented cars for 16 years past that age with never a question from a rental agent. I usually show my age at 70 and pay. I have been advised that there is no legal liability involved in not stating your age correctly.
If you dont want to state your age, you can leave the box empty.
My father rented a car in Naples airport when he was 82, and one in Bourton-on-the-Water when he was 79.
Hmm, the discovered my dad's age when he provided his driver's license. So, I'm wondering how you get away saying that you're younger. But more power to you. I think that you should be able to rent a car if you have a legal license. Pam
