We plan to drive from Galway to Dublin near the end of our trip. We are thinking of stopping for one night somewhere in between. Any suggestions? Or should we drive right through? Thanks.
A very nice trip is to head south from Galway and follow the coast to Cork. Spend the night in Cork and then head up to Dublin. Only a few hours drive that final day.
Or if you just want to get to dublin and miss the irish country side hop on the highway straight to dublin in only a few hours.
Clonmacnois has lovely high crosses and round towers. Or drive through Kildare county - rolling green fields of the greenest grass you have ever seen - its Irish horse country -- National Stud is in Tully.
Kilkenny is a great city, as is Kilarney if you have a bit of time to swing southward. Both are worth the trip.
Consider the area of Trim(short drive to Dublin airport).Neat castle and also near Newgrange which is a great stop.
Driving right through is not bad. At the end of the trip, you'll be used to it!
There is a very nice B&B in Newtownforbes, Co Longford, called Eden House. It might make a nice stopping point, with an easy drive to Dublin the next day. It's not exciting. But you could drive from there to Roscommon and see Strokestown Manor House and Famine Museum. It's not too far.
The drive is not such a pain, though longer (and we started in Westport). I'd rather spend my night in Dublin (which we did), as the food options are much better.
Only other thing I could comment on is if you're going through to Dublin have your directions sorted out before arriving in the city. After the rest of Ireland, Dublin's kind of a challenge no matter what they say about Galway drivers :)PS: If returning your rental in Ballsbridge (autoeurope) don't miss that left turn after the bridge!!
