We are looking at a trip in June where we plan to drive from Bath to St Ives in Cornwall. While Google maps and other online resources suggest this is a 4 hour drive, some people have told me the winding roads make it much longer. Any advice as to how long this trip might take (route appears to go on A30 most of the way out)? Is a train just a better bet, even though I understand having a car in Cornwall is a plus for getting around? Thanks for any thoughts you may share.
I haven't driven that specific route. But, 4 hours on a good A road sounds in the ballpark. If you are in a hurry, then, yes, check train schedules. if you aren't in a hurry, get on some of the B roads and make a day of it. Yes, you will want a car in Cornwall. You won't have any trouble renting a car in St. Ives. Google "St. Ives car hire", "St. Ives car rental", etc.
No. Most of the A30 is fast dual carriageway road, and the first 100 miles or so to Exeter is on motorway. The last few miles to St Ives may be narrower and slower. Journey time overall will depend very much on when you intend to travel, with a Saturday in summer being the worst.
The countrside between Bath and St Ives is very interesting with some lovely small town and villages. I have never done it in less than a day and a half. take your time and enjoy the drive.
