I have read on various DROID forums that even though there is no phone service, the GPS will work in Europe (turn-off assisted GPS and use a hotel's free WiFi to get an initial location - then works like home). Some people have used it successfully, others have had difficulty. Has anyone here had success using their DROID Gps in Ireland? Thank you! Karen
I'm not sure how it could "work like home". The phone's GPS is not a true GPS (doesn't get its location from satellites, but from cell towers). With the data function turned off it would only work where you had a wifi signal, which will be very sporadic, even in the cities. You could use it to get driving directions while you are in a wifi area, then just follow the written instructions. Is that what you mean?
No, it does get it's gps from satellites. If the phone is in an area where it gets cell service it uses the cell towers as "assistance", but if that "assisted gps" feature is turned off in settings, it forces the gps to only use satellites and it works as would a regular gps - according to some of the forums anyway.
But if that were true you wouldn't have to be in a wifi area to get an initial location. I have a Droid but haven't tried this. To know for sure how it works, why not try it here first? It should work the same way if it works at all.
But, that's just it, it can't be tested here. If you check your location settings, one of the 3 options is "use wireless networks' which includes both wifi AND cell towers, so can't isolate just wifi. The only way to check it in the US, is to find someplace with wifi but no cell service - which seems unlikely and certainly not in my area. But oh well. I will have my phone with me anyway, and will try to get service. I'll report back on whether or not it works. There are all sorts of "android forums" online and some people on them swear they had great luck using their droid gps anywhere from europe to south korea, and others complain they had no luck at all. Stay tuned... ;-)
Wouldn't putting the phone in airplane mode and then turning on the wireless only work? Then it wouldn't be accessing cell towers.
