We are arriving in Dover on a ship and need to get to Gatwick Airport. In checking buses and trains it seems it might be cheaperr and more efficent to rent a car. Any suggestions?

Taking National Express coaches certainly wouldn't be efficient. The minimum travel time is five hours with a change at London Victoria.
However, you can make the trip by train in two hours (with one change) for £23.10.
By the time you pay car rental fees and buy gasoline, I'm pretty sure that two train tickets will be cheaper. Take the train and enjoy a relaxing and hassle-free ride.
