double beds in England

Are double beds in england the same as doubles in the U>S? No one seems to mention a Queen. Please advise me. Thanks, kc

HI, we were last in Englad about 8 years ago and found that double beds are prevalent and seem to be the same size as in the US. We did run into some queen beds as they are becoming more common. We were generally so tired after a day of sight seeing that we didn't notice the small size of the beds. Good Luck!

I'm thinking Europe in general; I can't recall England being different. It depends a lot on where you stay. Most of the budget hotels offer either two single beds pushed together or a double that's smaller than a queen. Either come under the general heading "double room" - because the important question is how many the room can sleep. Many of the business hotels and all of the "American style" hotels have bigger beds. If it's important to getting a good night's sleep, you can find hotels with larger beds. I'm not sure the best way to search for larger beds. On tripadvisor you can see pics of the rooms, but they can be deceiving - a small bed in a tiny room can look big in a photo. Maybe start with the pictures then read the reviews to see if there are comments on the bed.

There will likely be a mix. In some of the smaller places we've stayed, a double bed was the size of a "double"-in other words it is smaller than a queen-size bed. Others did the two singles pushed together which makes it like a king size (but with a space in the middle). My 6'+ husband and I sleep in a queen at home, and though we can tell the double is smaller, it hasn't bothered us.

Doubles are the same there as here, i.e. too small for us. We look for "twin" rooms, i.e. two singles either apart or pushed together. We didn't find queen beds in the 3-star B&Bs where we mostly stayed. But bigger hotels would have them. If it's important, ask about the width in inches or centimeters (queen is 160 cm). Sometimes in France we've encountered "kings" that were actually queens, but not in Britain. Maybe, being a monarchy, they're more sensitive to the distinction!

When we were in Scotland a couple of years ago, the lady from whom we rented an apartment told us that a British King is the same as an American queen. She measured her king bed and I measured our queen and they were the same size. We are going to France and Belgium this spring. I have emailed every hotel at which we are staying to verify the bed size (160cm is an American Queen). They have all been very accommodating about responding to my request for information. If you are like us and just not comfortable in anything less than a queen bed, I would suggest asking. Queen beds are available, you just may have to search for them.
