We are visiting Ireland in March and are seeing the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. I read that Doolin was known for great music, but has become more touristy. Because we're going in March, I was concerned that there would be very little going on. Between the choice of staying in Doolin and Galway, does anyone have a recommendation. It looks like Galway doesn't have a lot of sights, but has fun nightlife. Thanks for you help!
Drove past Doolin and stayed in Salthill - suburb of Galway last Sept. I suspect Dolin would be pretty desolate in March. Galway is a nice town. There may not be a "lot" to see, but is has a cathedral, a river and a harbour. Galway Bay is a decent walk or a short bus ride for sea views at Salthill. Burren is interesting, rather unique and the Cliffs of Moher are impressive. Do not expect to get the Aran Islands in March, though. It is likely to be stormy and the few boats that may be scheduled may not, in fact, run.
You do not say how long you will be staying in that area, but as I recall, the Cliffs and The Burren could be seen in the same day.
I love Doolin, but it is verrrrry small. And you're right to be concerned that there will not be much going on in March. While it's certainly worth a visit, Galway would be a better place to stay.
I agree that Galway would be the better choice for your trip. And Iain is right: the Cliffs and the Burren can be seen in one day, though you could take two if you really wanted to take your time.
You don't say how long you're staying, or if you'll have a car, but if you have time you could start in Galway and see the Cliffs and Burren on your way south to Dingle. It's a great place to take in Irish culture and the scenery on the peninsula is amazing.
Galway. Looking for a budget location to stay try the Kinlay House.
