Doolin Ferries

I will be staying in near Ballyvaughan the first week of July, and spending 2 days on Inishmore following that. When I went in 2005 I took the ferry from Rossaveal, as I was based in Galway at the time. Doolin is much closer this time around, but Rick's book says that the ferries there are more unpredictable due to weather, etc. I've also seen a couple of reviews on-line that aren't very positive. Has anyone here taken a ferry from Doolin to Inishmore and back? Would really like to hear some first-hand experiences.

Thanks!

It's not just rainy days that cause the Doolin ferries to be canceled. I have been in Doolin on sunny days and found cancellations in effect. It's based more on how windy it may be, how choppy the sea is, etc.

If you absolutely must get to the Aran Islands on a specific date, you're better off heading north to catch the ferry, or book a flight over. And it's not just trying to get out from Doolin - it's trying to get back. If conditions change while you are on Inis Mor, you could find yourself staying overnight when maybe all you wanted was a day trip.

Ceidleh, thanks for your reply. You've confirmed what I was thinking. I was hoping to make Doolin work, because I don't like the idea of backtracking so much, especially when I'll be relying on public transportation. But I do need to get to Inishmore, and back, on specific dates, so the Doolin ferry sounds too unpredictable.

I appreciate your input - thank you!
