Dinner recommendations around Trafalgar Square?

Traveling to London in Sept 2012. We booked a couple concerts in the St. Martin in the Fields on Thursday and Saturday for 7:30pm. Was wondering if anyone had a great experience eating wise around Trafalgar/Charing Cross and would recommend a restaurant for dinner?

Eat in the Cafe-in-the-Crypt at St. Martin-in-the-Fields on one of your concert nights. It's a fun setting and the food is very good.

I was looking at that as a possibility. Glad to hear the food is good, cause it sure is convenient. Also looking at the Portrait Restaurant (7th floor) in the National Portrait Gallery just across the street. Thanks for the reply...

For a nice view across Trafalgar Square with dinner, book the restaurant in the National Portrait Gallery. Insist on a window table. It's more expensive than Cafe in the Crypt but the food is better and with a better menu ion. You might give a thought to the restaurant at the top of the Tate Modern Museum, not far from St. Martin, maybe one tube stop or probably walkable. The window views from there are also wonderful, right above the Thames. Both places will require reservations and I think you can dine at either place at 5PM or perhaps 6PM with plenty of time to get to your concerts. Both have websites. We've done both and prefer the Tate Modern with the great view from a window table.

Not too "Londony" but we really like the food at Pizza Express (there are some very near Trafalgar Square). Also on Whitehall there is a pub/restaurant called Lord Moon of the Stars (or something similar). Fun atmosphere and good food.

Sherlock Holmes pub is just off the Square in a small alley between the Square and the river.

Hello Gregory,
We have eaten at all four of those restaurants. We thought the National Portrait Gallery had better food / ambiance than the Tate, although we enjoyed both of them. I think the Tate Modern would be a bit too far from St. Martin in the Fields - we walked there from the Morgan Hotel but took a cab back. Sherlock Holmes is fun but can get very crowded - it draws a lot of locals who stop in for a drink after work. St. Martin in the Fields crypt has OK food, good desserts - it's like a slightly upscale cafeteria. It can be very noisy and hard to find vacant seats......If you want a really lovely dinner in a beautiful setting (but pricey), you might enjoy the Criterion restaurant.

Soho and Chinatown are very convenient to Trafalgar Square for a moe conventional evening meal. You could splurge at the Savoy Hotel.
