I've been reading restaurant reviews (on other sites) for places in Edinburgh, and have been coming across a lot of negativity. I find it hard to believe that a city like Edinburgh doesn't have great places to eat. Anyone have any recommendations?
I went to Howies Restaurant on Alva Street back in May 08 and had a delicious meal.
Here are two restaurants that we liked:
Blonde (http://www.blonderestaurant.com/index.htm) and
Always Sunday Food Company (http://www.alwayssunday.co.uk/)
We liked Fisher's Restaurant in Edinbourgh. It is on two levels--great seafood.
Thanks for the ideas. All three look good, and I'm very interested in trying what they call "banoffi pie".
I second Fishers. I've also had a good meal at the Mussel Inn. My parents and I had a lovely meal at the Stac Poly in New Town. Creelers was wonderful in old town. I've also had a good meal at the Shore. Someday I'll eat at the Witchery. I've had good italian, Indian and Turkish food, but didn't keep track of those restaurants. I used to have a great bar meal lunch at the Balmoral, but they've changed the downstairs bar. So, sad...but we went around the corner and found another pub. There are other great restaurants in New Town.

We ate at the Elephant House, which is where JK Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter novel, and the food was great. Not so much a table service restaurant - you order at the counter and they bring it to you - but we had an outstanding lunch there. There is also a great view of the castle from the back room window there. And we were impressed at how little they capitalized on the Harry Potter connection - there were a couple of signs that said "Birthplace of Harry Potter" and some pictures of JK Rowling, but they didn't seem to have changed their menu or the theme of the restaurant. It's just off the Royal Mile, although I can't remember which street. I think Rick mentions it in the Great Britain guide.
Dont' know what your budget is, but for a splurge, try The Kitchin - www.thekitchin.com

Wow, those all sound good. Thanks!
