Check www.aaroadwatch.ie. The route they recommend is the via the Tarbet-Killimer Ferry. They project 3 hrs 50 minutes. I believe that this is the most scenic route as well.

We were in Ireland last week and took the route via Limerick. It took the same amount of time, but I Limerick had traffic and if you hit it at the wrong time it will add to the travel time. If you go the Limerick route, Adare is a nice halfway stop for a break.

Enjoy!

Definitely take the Killimer-Tarbert ferry across the Shannon River. Then you have two choices after you get to the other side: (1) Drive to Galway via Ennis (faster), or (2) Drive to Galway along the coast (slower but much more scenic).

We also took the car ferry across from Dingle on the way to Galway. I believe that RS has more details in his Ireland book about this, otherwise your B&B hosts will probably give you direction. We then drove to see the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren with stops at Pol na Brone dolmen and Aillwee caves then on to Galway. It ended up being a longer day and we didn't arrive in Galway until about 8pm, but very fun! If you are looking for a great B&B in Galway, Joan's Periwinkle is wonderful and she is one of the sweetest Irish women you could ever meet and very helpful!Have fun!

Barbie,

My wife and I were in Ireland last month. We stayed in Dingle and then headed to Galway.

I would definitely recommend taking the route that includes the ferry. It is fast and more scenic.

We stopped at a B&B near Kilrush, a small town just after the ferry. We spent the night and then headed up the coast to take in the Cliffs and the Burren on our way to Galway. It was an enjoyable day, not too stressful, and we got in to Galway around 5 or 6.

As someone else mentioned, if you don't want to go to the Cliffs you can just head straight to Galway, but the ferry is still the best option.
