I really want to drive the Dingle Peninsula and thought we'd stay in the town itself (tentative confirmation with Milestone B&B); however, I'm not sure it it should be 1 or 2 nights. It seems a quieter place to rest up a couple of days out of our 14 day trip. But will we get bored? Would it be better to stay here a night, finish the drive out going Northwest up to Tralee and beyond. I've also read in another link on this site that it would be best to stay in Tralee, drive in from that side, stay in Dingle a night, then drive out. Any opinions??
I stayed in Dingle 8 nights when I originally planned to only stay 3, so I certainly did not get bored! I found there was lots to do there, plus it is absolutely beautiful. It was my favorite place in all of Ireland. I would definitely stay there over Tralee, as it is not that far to Tralee anyway and Dingle is gorgeous (voted one of National geographics most beautiful places).
Dingle is a magical place that won't tire you out. There's a lot to do there. I've been there twice and I'll be going again next spring.
I'd play it by ear. You can easily do the Dingle drive and go to Tralee on the same day. Is there anything special you want to see in Tralee? Not really much of a tourist town except during the festival
No reason for Tralee except I thought it would be a good place to stop on the way from Kinsale. With everyone warning about how much longer driving time it takes, I was concerned about driving the whole way to Dingle. Plus, I've also read it is better to do the Connor Pass from the other way down into Dingle so that you aren't on the 'cliff' side. What do you think?
Stay two nights. At least! Dingle is a wonderful town; you cannot possibly get bored in that short of time.
Stay as longas you can in Dingle! Doubt if you will be bored. If you run out of things to do on land, take a boat trip to the Blasket Islands. Took the Connors Passroad in the opposite direction from mentioned above and found it scenic too. We drove Kinsale to Dingle via Bantry and I think we left around 9:30 and got there about 6 with several stops. Admittedly my sister was driving and she lives in Scotland and used to narrow roads.
Thanks, Ian..can't wait to get to Dingle!
Dingle is great. Fantastic scenery, and great people. I biked the 30 odd mile peninsula which was cool, but very tiring. Anyways, i think 2 nights in dingle would be much better than just one.
Stay in Dingle. It was my favorite place in Ireland. Staying 2 nights somewhere only gives you one full day. We stayed 2 nights at the Milestone House and we loved it. First, Michael & Barbara are wonderful. They provide hand-drawn maps of both Dingle and the Peninsula, with recommendations for the best places to go. Secondly, they serve a killer breakfast. The soda bread is to-die-for!!! Enjoy Ireland!
Regina, I agree with the others - Dingle is a fantastic place! Is there any way you can add a few nights, as I don't think two nights will be enough? It's a wonderful place to relax and a great town for Pubs and "authentic" music (the Church in the centre of town is an excellent venue!). There are also some interesting historic sites in that area, including the Gallarus Oratory and the Blasket Islands Visitor Centre. Touring the sites with a Guide will provide a more interesting experience (IMHO) and there are Guides listed in the book (the retired Police Chief is excellent!). You might find that you don't want to leave! Happy travels!
My husband and I love Dingle. I would say a minimum of 2 days if you really like history and Rick's book. We took a lot of time to slowly travel the pennisula via car with his book and out to hike some along the way. We stayed at the Alpine Guesthouse at you get into town and it was a great spot to walk from. I would highly recommend the Archaeological tour Rick suggests. We had travelled the penisula on our own the day before and went to some of the same stops, but the family doing this tour had so much information and were a lot of fun. Enjoy your trip.
If you like seafood, besure to make reservations at "Out of the blue seafood only restaurant". We ate there two nights in a row, we loved it so much. It is by the harbor in Dingle.
Out of the Blue is great! We also enjoyed the Stonehouse out beyond Ventry - Sliegh Head (SP?). many of the locals were speaking Irish, but no music.
stayed at the milestone house last september. barbara is amazing, they are great hosts. it is a bit out of town and at times i wish i had stayed in town. spent three nights in dingle, could easily have been a week. do try the global village for dinner, out of the blue is amazing, but i spend alot of time in seattle and wasn't crazy impressed with the fresh fish. have fun, be safe.
The great thing about doing this on our own is flexibility! Based on all the comments, I have added another night - 3 total - in Dingle. Can't wait for Sept. 26 to get here now. The pic's I viewed on www.tripadvisor.com of the Milestone B&B and surrounding area are amazing. This site is wonderful, too! Ya'll have helped so much.
Not too long at all! Milestone House is wonderful and Michael's soda bread is the best there is! The pubs have great food and there's a church in town with a concert several nights a week - execellent when we went. The drive around the peninsula will take all day if you get out and visit all the sites on the way. We drove Connor Pass up from Dingle and back down again and the driving was fine both ways. Take your time and enjoy all it has to offer!
We have been there on 3 separate ocasions and have rented a house for a month in March. I do not think you will be bored in Dingle. If so , stop in any pub buy a local a pint and you will have more information than you can handle.
My wife and I drove the Ring of Kerry starting in Kenmare and then headed to Dingle all in the same day, so just going from Kinsale to Dingle is very doable in one day. No need to stay in Tralee. Definitely give Dingle at least the 2nd night. You won't regret it. We stayed at Milestone House and loved it.
A month in Dingle wouldn't be too much if you are an active person who likes to walk and a curious person who likes to explore. We stayed 7 days and were so sorry to leave; it was the best overall experience in Ireland. Highly recommend the PAX Guest House B&B about a l0 minute stroll above Dingle. It is nestled into a hillside overlooking Dingle Bay and as soon as you enter the fuchsia-bordered front door and are greeted by the owner, John O'Farrell, and his dog, Rio, you know something special is happening. Comfortable couches and chairs, plump pillows and original art from Europe, the Americas and Asia are everywhere, including your room. There will be a bronze sculpture in your room, you can bet on that, and a pair of binoculars for you to use to watch the fishing boats moving out to sea, a dolphin perhaps, and the sheep and cows grazing below the guest house in the meadows. Fresh flowers every morning and chocolate surprises at night too. Breakfast is sublime...fresh mango juice, pancakes, eggs any way you wish, crisp bacon and sausage, and, best of al, John's homemade blackberry preserves to spread on tiny fresh scones. If you are lucky enough to get one of the patio sea view rooms, beware...you may never leave. Contact John O'Farrell at [email protected] or www.pax-house.com. Phone 353 (0)66-9151518
