Dingle fly fishing and horse races?

My step-son is an avid fly fisherman and my son loves fishing as well (both adults). We have never been deep sea fishing although I see several topics on that and we're planning on trying that once we get there. What about non deep water, like lakes and rivers? any ideas or advice? also, they want to take their own poles and tackle and will be flying delta out of the US. I'm thinking they may be better off renting tackle in dingle or some other place once we get there. (we'll be self catering in Annascaul) has anyone had any experience with these issues or suggestions?

one other question: what time is the dingle horse race? we get into Shannon at 930 on the 12th and i would love to see it if we could manage. thanks!

Can't help with the fishing. Info on Dingle races at www.dingle-region.com/races.htm. There are also races on the beach but I think that is over the may Bank Holiday week-end and races at Ballyferriter.

I recently got back but I didn't do any fishing. I'll give you some info on fishing in Ireland.

Here's a website:

http://www.discoverireland.com/us/ireland-things-to-see-and-do/activities/fishing/why-ireland/

This is probably a decent place to start. I saw sea fishing spots while driving around Dingle. It appears to be surf fishing although fly fishing with the right equipment would possilby work. I don't know about access issues. It may not be possible to just cast into any body of water you encounter. Guides are available and Rick's book occasionally mentions some.

As for traveling with rods. Three or four piece rods can be carried on to the plane. Two piece will have to go as luggage. Reels can be carried on also. Hooks must go in checked luggage (even size 20 dry flies!).

I didn't see anything that would imply rented tackle was available. Most guides provide tackle for clients.

I haven't fished there but http://dinglefishing.com/ seems to have some pretty good information.

The only real fly fishing shop I've ever seen was in Clifden but I haven't spent a lot of time in the Midlands where it's more popular.
