We have a 7 hour layover in Keflevic and was wondering how eary (or hard) it is to get downtown to explore and then back to the airport. I'm sure there are buses and shuttles, but just wondering if anyone has any experiences they can share. Thanks, Duane
No personal experience, but I keep reading that the Blue Lagoon is close to the airport (closer than Reykjavik) and highly worthwhile. Here are some websites about your options that I found by Googling: http://www.layoverguide.com/2012/03/iceland-layover.html http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/nordic-countries/954752-long-layover-keflavik-iceland.html
Just did this a couple of weeks ago with about the same length of time layover. There is a bus from the airport into Reykjavik. It is about a 40 minute ride and then from the bus station into town in another 10 minute walk. The weather was cold (50's) and rainy but we still enjoyed walking around and had a nice lunch in one of the small cafes. We chose not to go to the Blue Lagoon but it also just as easy to get to from the airport and only about 20 minutes away. When we were ready to go back, we just walked back to the bus station and headed back to the airport. Can't remember the exact cost but it was about $25 roundtrip.
Thank you both for the excellent info!
I don't disagree at all with Leslie's response, but since no one else who has replied has actually been to the Blue Lagoon, I just wanted to share that experience. It is about 20 minutes from and back to the airport, so it would be very easy and you won't feel rushed or feel like you need to be watching the clock. The experience of being at the Blue Lagoon was so pleasant and relaxing, and in the middle of a long travel day, when you're tired and been cramped into tiny airplane seats for 7 hours, you'll really enjoy it. There's a nice restaurant there where you can have lunch, spend time soaking in the spa, get a massage if you want, and start your vacation feeling great! If you really want to see Reykjavik (which is a nice town but not a real tourist draw in and of itself), by all means do it. There's a very good free walking tour you might be able to join up on, and you can easily explore on foot on your own. Just give some due consideration to the Blue Lagoon and think about whether that would be more what your body and soul need.
