I am planning our next trip. I was planning on spending 3 days in Denmark either Copenhagen or Aero. After getting the Rick Steve's book on Copenhagen I began 2nd guessing my choice. He didn't sound real "high" on it. And then I started to think....I have never seen a travel channel show on Denmark, is there a reason? SO, I am thinking of changing my destanation to Amsterdam. What do you think?
Season 5 - Episode 10: Rick Steves does Copenhagen (Scandinavia's most fun-loving capital)<----his words, not mine. You can watch it on Hulu: Click on Rick on TV at the top of the navigation bar, then lower left hand click on HULU. Scroll thru all the epsiodes( see small pics near the bottom) of RS travel shows. Copenhagen is usually around the sixth page. I think you should travel to places that appeal to you, even if they don't appeal to Rick. PS: I'm quite sure Rick is "high" on Amsterdam. LMAO
Thank you - I just watched it and am now quite excited about going to Copenhagen!
I have been to both and really enjoyed each one, but I have to say I think Copenhagen had a little more appeal for me. It has a great energy and I wish I could have stayed longer just to hang out with the beautiful Danish people...I also think they are rated as the happiest people in the world (if not the top, then close to it) and it looked that way!
We spent two delightful nights in Sønderborg, Denmark visiting a former exchange student, but it would have been pleasant without knowing anyone there. But I want to go to Amsterdam, too. There are many great places off the beaten path, just never enough time.
I don't think you can go wrong with either Copenhagen or Amsterdam. The first time I visited Copenhagen was a three day stay and when I left I thought I'd probably not return. I have been there several times since, and each visit has been a real joy. Driving around Denmark is easy and the rest of the country is beautiful and friendly, especially Aero.
Last year I spent a week in Amsterdam and had a fantastic time. Great museums, easy to walk and explore and easy to take the train to visit small town Netherlands. Visit one of the cities this year and the other the next time you travel to Europe. Have a great time.
I much preferred Copenhagen. I just felt a lovely spirit from the people, found the sights really enjoyable (I love castles), and just generally clicked with it - I think we all have places we find we "click" with at first sight. I can't wait to go back someday as soon as I can hopefully afford it. I was in Amsterdam immediately followed by Copenhagen and while 4 days I felt was MORE than enough for me in Amsterdam, I had 5 days in Copenhagen and could have used many more. I know a lot of people who think Amsterdam is the greatest place on earth. Frankly I don't drink, I'm not a 20something male, and I don't smoke pot, so a lot of what Amsterdam has to offer didn't appeal to me. Once you get past that and see the sights, it is also a lovely city, I just didn't enjoy the very center at all. No joke on the prices in Copenhagen though. and btw, Samantha Brown also has done a show on Copenhagen.
Denmark is wonderful! Don't go by the Travel Channel - they aren't in the business of telling us about clean, cheerful, pretty, super friendly, idyllic places, now are they. I mean, where's the drama in that!? Copenhagen is one of my very favorite cities. It has Big City Energy, and yet it still feels safe and welcoming. The food's amazing, and of course so is the beer... and there is more to do there than you think. From strolling the Strøget, to visiting Tivoli, to seeing the art at the Danish National Gallery, to wandering through the free town of Christiania, to the Rosenborg Castle, to the Little Mermaid, to touring Hans Christian Andersen's house in Nyhavn, and then taking in the awesome people-watching at an outdoor cafe... whew! There's just - a lot. So, I vote for Denmark. Oh - and the people are crazy cool. So nice! So helpful!
I liked Copenhagen a lot more than Amsterdam. IMO there's are more sites and still plenty of fun and nightlife. A Copenhagen Card will cover your transportation and admission to many sites. Hop off the plane, buy a Copenhagen Card at the Information booth and take the Metro to Kongen's Nytorv. You will be at Nyhaven (one end of the Stroget) in fifteen minutes. We were there five full days and ran out of time before we ran out of things we wanted to see. Copenhagen is best in July/August when days are warm and long. Late June would also be nice (Summer Solstice). Amsterdam rains on average every other day all year (varies a little, but not much, by season).
