My husband and I will be in Denmark for 6.5 days in May. This is what we have tentatively come up with: day .5 - arrive CPH 1pm - get settled into hotel and wonder around day 1 - sight see in CPH - RS book walking tour, museums, etc. day 2 - more sightseeing, Carlsberg brewery tour, Tivoli Gardens day 3 - visit Frederiksborg or Kronborg castle, more sightseeing in CPH day 4 - take train to Roskilde (see cathedral and Viking Ship museum), then continue to Odense (stop to see what's there), end the day in Ærø day 5 - sightsee in Ærø day 6 - sightsee in Ærø or side trip *must take train to CPH/airport day 7 - fly out CPH 7:30am Is this doable? I understand it's a small country, but I don't want to overdo it. If we have cut anything out, what do you suggest not seeing? On the other hand, what should we try not to miss? Any other thoughts and insight would be helpful! Thanks!
Roskilde is going to take up more time than you suspect. So is Odense, it's not a casual stop once you start studying up on it. I'm going to bet you'll be disappointed with Aero. It's a pain in the tail to get to, it robs too much time, and if you hadn't read about it in Mr Steves book, you wouldn't have even considered it - - it's a tenth-tier attraction, if that. Think about going up to Helsingor and taking the ferry over to Helsingborg for the day instead.
Thanks Ed, your response is very helpful. Our other thought was to stay in Copenhagen the entire time - that would allow us to do several day trips at leisure. (I had a feeling Roskilde and Odense are not towns to breeze through...)
I like Helsingor a lot and recommend a full day there. It is even worth an overnight in my book it's so charming. I'm sure Aero is beautiful and charming. Whether you go there is a question of what your interest is: cities and musuems or rural landscapes and bike riding.
Thank you Douglas for your suggestion. I have been looking into Helsingor and think that would be a good option. Can you personally recommend somewhere to stay? I've been looking on TripAdvisor and so far, am not impressed by any of the accommodations there.
Agree that Ærø and Odense can be missed. Hillerød with Fredericksborg Castle is not to be missed. Tivoli is worth seeing twice..... once in the daytime and again at night with all the lights. Makes sense to stay in Copenhagen for the 7 nights.
I would agree with Ed on Ærø. Yes, it is a charming island, and the small town of Ærøskøbing is nice, but it is quite far away and a bit complicated to get to. If you want to see charming villages, you have some options much closer to Copenhagen: Dragør, old fisherman's village, quite close to Copenhagen is a good option, very nice and pictureque, and a 30 minutes' bus ride away.
