Debit/credit card in Ireland?

We only use this type of card..always despised credit cards...will this be a problem on our 2 week trip through Ireland? We've got a car reserved with CountyCar to pick up in Dublin and now I notice they're requesting we present a credit card. Yes, I'm callling them, but wondering if this is going to be a problem anywhere else!

Regina, normally a CREDIT CARD is required for car rentals. I'm not familiar with the "Debit/credit card" you're using. Has it got any Visa or MasterCard logos on the back? I've found that my debit card won't work in Europe for "point-of-sale" transactions in the same way that it does at home, however it works fine for ATM withdrawals. If you were thinking of using the card for direct payment for goods or services, you may have a problem. Good luck!

A lot of rental car companies won't accept debit cards. When you use a debit card for a car or hotel room, a hold of a few hundred dollars is usually placed on the funds in your checking account until you return the car/check out of your room. This hold is supposed to be released immediately but sometimes it can take a couple of days. In the meantime you may check into another hotel and another hold will be placed.....so unless you have a lot of money in your checking account you could run into some temporary cash flow problems. When you use a regular credit card the hold is placed on your credit limit, which for most people is over $10,000. The car companies have had so many complaints about this, a lot of them will just take credit cards to avoid the hassle on both ends. But with most debit cards having the MC/Visa logo on them, it's getting harder to distinguish the difference them and credit cards so a clerk may accidentally accept it.

Thanks, guys. This is what I feared. My husband wants to make the call to County to make sure he understands what their policy is, but I'm afraid we'll have a problem. It is a Visa.

i've not been to ireland yet (next month), but a couple of years ago i was in scotland and i rented a vehicle with my debit card. it has a visa logo on it, and the only thing is, they put a deductible hold on your card, so if you have enough money in your bank account to cover that hold and you won't need it to spend, you will be fine with a debit/credit card.
