Day Trips To York

Has anybody used a particular tour company to take a day trip from London to York? I was wondering if it would just be practical to get a train from London to York and then do a Hop-on-, Hop-off bus tour of York. Thank you.

If you take the train to York, it takes about two hours. It's less than a mile from the train station to York Minster and the walk is pleasant. Most of the tourist sites are within a mile of York Minster. I don't think you need a bus if you are OK with walking maybe 2-3 miles over the course of your day. There's lots of places to sit down and just enjoy the atmosphere.

Thank you Cynthia. We will just take the train from London on our own then and enjoy York.

Train to York is easy (just be sure you get one that goes directly to York- we ended up on one where we had to change). The walk into town is easy, you enter very close to the Minster. I would prefer to stay over one night, rather than train back to London same day. i suppose it depends on how close your hotel is to the station on London . You wiull do a lot of walking

Thank you Brian for your information. Yes we learned the hard way once and got on a train that wasn't going all the way through to our destination. Thank you for the warning. Unfortunately, we won't be able to spend the night in York though. Have a great week. Elaine

Elaine, the East Coast line runs several trains each day nonstop to York from King's Cross station. It is a two hour trip. I've done the day trip twice. Go up as early in the morning as you are comfortable with. Come back on the next to last train for the night. (In case something happens. You don't want to miss the last train.) As you leave the York station, turn left on the street and you will be walking to the town center. It is very close. Along the way you will pass a stop for the local tour bus. it's worth paying for the hour ride just to orient yourself. Get a map of York town center, so you can keep track of where you have been and where you are going. They didn't build to a grid layout 1,000 years ago. I'd skip the rail museum and the Viking museum on a one-day visit. Don't miss the Minster. It's outstanding.
