I am planning to stay in Cardiff for a few nights before going on the London for two weeks in early August. I will travel by rail and would like suggestions for day trips. I'm thinking of Bath, Stonehenge and some nearby locations both in England and in Wales ( I will spend my first full day in Cardiff while I get my bearings). Are there any worthwhile tours out of Cardiff, either by rail or tour company bus. I really enjoyed the Puffin tours when I was in Inverness and am thinking that there might be something on that order. Thanks in advance for suggestions! Once I get this sorted out, I'll ask about London. Diane
Barry Island is near Cardiff and has high street shops and a Pier type entertainment area.
Caerphilly, one of the great castles of southern Wales, is only about ten miles north of Cardiff.
The boat tour of Cardiff harbor is excellent.
The National Museum is well-done and worth a few hours.
The best day trips out of Cardiff depend on your interests. Cardiff Bay is interesting, but not really a day trip as it is essentially in the city. The Welsh National Assembly is there and is quite stunning.
Caerphilly is a nice castle and town that is easily assessable by rail from Cardiff Central or Queen Street stations. This would probably be your best day trip.
The Gower Peninsula has great hiking, but is really only doable if you rent a car or are prepared to do some changes on the bus.
Merthyr Tydful is a nice town that was once a mining center and has some minor museums and a good high street.
Brecon is a charming town in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Small castle, cathedral, museum and charming to stroll around. I really enjoyed my day there.
If you are into hiking, the Brecon Beacons have stunning vistas and sights.
PM me for more info if you like.
Thanks to all for the great info. Has anyone taken a tour from Cardiff to Bath/Stonehenge?
Ouch! Bath might be okay, since it's only about an hour. Stonehenge is at least two, which is a lot of riding time to see a pile of rocks. Maybe think about Avebury which is only about an hour and a half away and better than Stonehenge.
Regarding Stonehenge, I found it amazing. I've actually been there twice, last time going to Avebury as well. Personally, I liked Avebury better. One can actually walk among the stones, there are FAR less tourists, and it is a very personal site.

Seems to have some good options, depending on the days you are able to travel. The Wye Valley and Gower Peninsula tours look most interesting to me, but that of course depends on your desires.
