My wife and I will be traveling to Dublin and staying for 4 nights in the beginning of November. Is a day trip to Edinburgh practical? Air flights seem inexpensive.
Even flying you would not really have enough time to enjoy Edinburgh as you would still have the half-hour bus ride into town and there's lots of construction in the city centre at the moment slowing things down. And you have to go through security and immigration at the airport each time. There are so many day trip possibilities from Dublin within Ireland; I would choose one of those instead.
Anything is possible but is it practical? If you get first flight out of Dublin at 7AM, you have to factor in half hour trip from Dublin to airport, an hour before check in and an hour flight then half hour from airport into center of Edinburgh. That is three hours and coming back to Dublin is another 3 hours. That would leave you about 6 to 8 hours in Edinburgh. Can you see a lot in six to eight hours, yes old Town is very compact. It would be a very long day as you would have to be up at about 3:30AM to get shower, etc and get to airport. Only you can decide if worth it. Would do day trips from Dublin myself.
There's lots of day trips from Dublin that don't require that much travel. There's not much daylight in November either....
It all depends on how badly you want to see Edinburgh. I can only tell you if you do do this you'll only end up wanting to go back and stay awhile. It really deserves more that the few hours of daylight you can give it.
Mike, Given the time, distance and costs, and also the possibility of unexpected delays in November (weather), that's not a day trip I'd take. There's lots to see around Dublin, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding things to do for three days. My suggestion would be to plan a trip to Edinburgh with enough time to actually see some of the sights. Cheers!
