Day Trip from Edinburgh

Hey there, everyone. Some friends and I are looking at taking a day tour from Edinburgh where we leave and come back in the same day. It'll be on a Tuesday in mid-March. Does anyone have any recommendations on which tour to take? We'd like to do a scotch distillery and maybe make it up to Loch Ness. Thanks in advance,
Adam

My wife and I did a great day trip out to Stirling while in Edinburgh. This town is the site of Stirling Castle and also the site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge---as shown in the movie Braveheart. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling As I recall, this was only about a 60 minute train ride.

I did a day tour up to Loch Ness, lovely scenery, but I won't name the company since I wouldn't recommend them at all. There are lots of companies, look for one with an itinerary that you like.

I would second the suggestion of Stirling. You can also visit the Bannockburn Battle site as well as the Castle. The royal apartments are re-opening soon. You might want to check about the schedule. http://www.stirlingcastle.gov.uk/. Linlithgow is also close and easily reached by train. Blackness Castle is close to Linlithgow, but I don't now how to get there via public transit. Of course, Glasgow makes a nice day out too. It's a quick train trip from Edinburgh. And, while you have to finish the trip by bus, you can take the train to Leuchers and see St. Andrew's. Dumfermline also has a great castle and cathedral. Culross is a wonderful small village to visit. Check it out on Undiscovered Scotland. http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/culross/culross/index.html/ Lastly, check with the Tourist Office for ornanized tours to the borders. They are close and don't requier as much bus time as going up to the highlands. Check your bus time for any trip north of Perth. Pam

We did a day tour up to Loch Ness, the Great Glenn, and a few other minor stops. it was a lot of driving, but the scenery was beautiful and we were able to get out quite a bit. I would highly recommend it, we had a great time. As already said, I think that most of the tours are roughly the same, so a quick internet search should work.
