Does anyone have experience with Dan Dooley rentals? If something went wrong, how helpful were they?
Do you have other suggestions? We'll be flying into Dublin and spending out time mostly along the southern and western coasts. Traveling next spring. I'd welcome any suggestions, including which agency? Any experience with booking through a travel web site (eg, expedia)? How soon should we reserve to get good prices? Looks like it will be an expensive undertaking (2 wks, automatic), so I'd like to get the best deal. Thanks!
I always rent from Irish Car Rentals. They have a US 800 number for any questions you may have before or after your rental. You should book your rental as soon as possible, particularly if you want to rent an automatic. You can then keep watching the websites and if you find a better deal, you can cancel the first and take the new one.
have used Dan Dooley twice-came with Sceptre Tour package-not real impressed-had a tire problem-shredded it a bit on a narrow road-we waited 2 hours for assistance after we called them-they didn't show so we continued on our trip.Fortunately the tire was okay. They are a SMALL outfit-waited a long time in Dublin getting our car at the airport from them. That said-if they come with the package probably would use them again rather than pay more.
I feel honored that one of my posts made Steve's recommended list. It did go on seemingly forever.
I priced multiple companies and ultimately went with the cheapest being Budget at the time. I booked through the web with the Irish branch and bought all the insurance.
They tried to give me a mid-sized BMW with a manual shift but my wife went nuts. She didn't want me to be driving a manual and we ended up getting a Skoda that had been in numerous minor wrecks. All in all, the final Budget price might have been about $50 less than Dooley who is usually the higher cost provider.
My recommendation is to price numerous companies and make sure you see what their super CDW costs. If you're not an Irish driving pro, I'd recommend getting all of the insurance. You can save about 1/3 with a manual. I intend to get a manual transmission next time but you definitely need to be comfortable with the decision.
Thanks all! I haven't driven in Ireland (or driven a manual, for that matter) since the early 80s, but I still remember the challenges. The idea of booking early and then continuing to check is a great one.
Drove an automatic midsize car the first time in Ireland in 2006, and then opted for a manual transm. small car the 2nd time in the summer of 2009. I adjusted well to the manual, although I had driven stick shift vehicles for over 300,000 miles in my early driving years. That being said, it did take a little getting used to since I have owned nothing but automatic trans. vehicles for the past 20 years. The only problem was that I ground the gears a few times, much to my wife's concern, but no harm done....except to my pride! I would suggest you drive around the rental car parking lot several minutes, shifting into reverse etc to get use to it...then go for it!! Dan
Sherry, If you're interested, I can let you know how we did with Dooley. We'll be back first week of October from a driving trip to Ireland. We priced out several other car companies, and it seemed to be the most competitive. We were quoted $199 for a 10-day car rental (manual, that's all my husband will drive) with CDW insurance. Since we are paying with a debit card, we chose to pay the additional insurance $150 total (liability) to avoid a 1,000 euro hold on our card. With all that coverage, we're only liable up to 100 euros, if something should happen.
G Maria, that would be great. I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. I found their price to be better than others, but am concerned about some of what I've read. Sherry
