Currency in the British Isles

Where is the best place to exchange US$ for British pounds? At a bank in the US before I leave? At an ATM at the Heathrow airport ? Other suggestions? Should I plan on using my Visa credit card for most purchases?

Get your money at an ATM but not at Heathrow (unless you need a little to get into town). The ATMs there are Travelex, not a bank-associated ATM, and the rates won't be as good. I use cash for just about everything except hotels.

Other than maybe having $100 worth of pounds before you go, there is no need to "exchange" currency. Physically exchanging money is a very expensive proposition. Just get cash from an ATM like you do at home. You'll pay 1-5% above the interbank rate for that day using an ATM, all depending on your own bank's fees. "Exchanging" money will cost you 5-10% minimum, if not more. And as noted, the Travelex ATM's at Heathrow are a private enterprise, so they charge fees to use them. Try to avoid them if possible. Finally, make sure you notify your bank of your trip so they don't lock your card. Also try and increase your daily withdrawl limit to minimize fees for each time you use the ATM. It can help to have a backup card in case something goes wrong with your regular ATM card or checking account. Visa is fine for larger expenses (hotels, restaurants), but not for small things. And do not use a debit card for purchases in Europe.

I just call Triple A yesterday to see if they would be able
to exchange US$ for British pounds and the answer was yes. Also they told me if you are a member there is no fee for this service. I was told that it usually take two days to get the pounds but if you came to their office before 3pm you may receive the pounds the next day.

True, there is no "fee", but their exchange rate is terrible compared to getting your money from an ATM.

Yes, as Nancy says, AAA's exchange rate is bad. I like to bring some local currency with me and I've learned to shop around. Try different banks and see how much you'll get for your American money.
