currency conversion from banks in UK

My husband and I plan to bring some US dollars to the UK as a backup for ATMs and credit cards. Will banks like Barclay's exchange dollars for GBPs? (We do not have a bank account like B of A that may have an affiliation. We bank through a credit union). Or will be need to make the exchange through Western Union?

Marks and Spencer department stores also have a currency exchange counter. I have found it convenient and fair enough when exchanging cash.

And there are always places like Thomas Cook. Large hotels generally do currency exchange, too, though probably only intended for their guests.

You can always buy some pounds here from Wells Fargo. I always bring the correct currency with me as back up. I like to purchase the money while the rates are best (usually in February through April). If you are not a Wells Fargo customer, they have a website that doesn't require you to bank with them. You have to order a $200 minimum but truly - right now that gets you 120 pounds. You purchase using your visa or master card. It's called their Foreign Exchange Service. Hope this gives you another option.
