County Donegal

My husband and I will be doing a home exchange in Killybegs for a week in mid to late August 2011. We've never been to Ireland. So, any suggestions as to things we should do/avoid? How far is Galway? We will have a car too. Thanks.

Galway is about 4 hours driving time. You will be close to the Slieve League sea cliffs and Glencolumbkille both of which should be seen, also Glenveigh National Park. Take the road to St. Johns Point, great restaurant there,"Castle Murray House". Ardara and the area north up into Gweedore is scenic. Derry in Northern Ireland is only about two hours away. Although most tourists from the US ignore Donegal it is the most scenic county in Ireland, and has the fewest tourists. I have spent a week on two different occasions in Dunkineely which is only 7 miles from Killybegs. McIntyres pub in Dunkineely has great trad music on Wednesday nights, all local musicians and no tour buses lined up outside. (www.donegaldirect.ie)and (www.donegal.ie) should help.

Killybegs is a great place. Small village but very friendly locals A drive up to Gweedore and over to Innishowen can be really nice overnite or day trips. There are quite a few music festivals in August in Donegal.

Killybegs is the center of Ireland's fishing industry, but unfortunately that industry has become depressed. As an earlier poster noted, it is not far from Slieve League, which is worth a visit. We went to the lookout point across from Slieve League, but it was a foggy day. Still quite a view. There were not many restaurants open when we were there (late September) but Kitty Kelly's was excellent. Reservations recommended. They have a website, I believe.

Between Donegal Town and Slieve League Cliffs is a small village called "Dunkineely" home to the famous "Baskins" Restaurant. This has been hailed by many, on various web sights as having some of the best fish and chips in all of Ireland. We were there in Aug of 09, and will have to agree. Worth a stop or a special trip! Dan
