Hello! I'm taking my mom on a trip to England this spring. We already have airfare booked on Virgin Atlantic, and have a preliminary itinerary. It would be very kind if some folks familiar with England could critique it for us... Day 1: Arrive Heathrow 7:40am - London for HOHO bus tour, more detail at Tower of London, possibly other? - train to Bath (or would you spend the night in London?) Day 2: Bath (Roman Baths, Abbey, Royal Crescent, pm tea) Day 3: Rent car - Lacock, Castle Combe, Avebury (spend night in Bath again, or move on to Cotswolds?) Day 4: some combination of Slaughters, Stow-on-the Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury, Broadway Day 5: Chipping Camden, Hidcote Gardens Day 6: Oxford - colleges, library, pubs, shopping Day 7: Chatsworth Day 8: Preston - LDS Temple, drive to Lake District Day 9 & 10: Lake District - Beatrix Potter, Wordsworth sites, boat ride, short rambles - drive to York Day 11: York - walls, Minster, Shambles, Castle Museum Day 12: Steam train to Whitby, Scarborough Day 13: Train to Windsor - Castle, Park, Eton
Day 14: Depart Heathrow 10am
First suggestion would be to save London until the end;
you won't have to deal with what to do with your luggage on Day 1, plus you'll be returning to London anyway via train from York. Begin by going to Bath on arrival for 2 nights. Day 3 move on to the Cotswolds. Do Broadway same day as Chipping Campden since they're so close together. Combine 4 of the days into two (Chatsworth & Preston, & maybe 1 day in Lake Dist?) so you could train to London the morning of Day 11 for 2 nights and still have Windsor for Day 13. So many possibilities......
I think the only thing I would do differently is to do London last. That way you can catch the bus to Bath directly from LHR. In Bath try to visit the Assembly Rooms and don't forget that #1 Royal Crescent is a museum. Will your base in the Cotswolds be your only one before heading to the Lake District? The drive on your day 8 will be a fairly long one but it should be an easy day too. You are dropping your car in York and you are planning to sleep in Windsor your last night? You could still do that and make London a day trip from there. However you decide, this is going to be a fun trip.
Mary, as others have suggested, just take a bus from Heathrow to Bath after arrival. Inevitably, you'll be both tired and excited, as well as jetlagged. Take things easy the first day so your body adjusts. My suggestion is to prioritize what you want to see on a given day. That allows you to decide to spend more or less time on something without fretting about it. Because your departing flight leaves Heathrow at 10am, you'll really need to be there around 7am. That means leaving London at 5:30-6am. If it was me, I'd stay at a Heathrow hotel the night before and grab a few more hours of sleep.
Great Mills, MD? If so, I did a tour at Pax River....Anyway, I digress :) We did a trip to England this past September very similar to the front end of your trip, also took my mom, and flew over on Virgin Atlantic. Recommend a few days in London, to include a very British show on the West End (War Horse or Billy Elliott). Check in to the London by Night bus tour - beautiful. Yes, leave Bath after two nights and settle down in the Cotswolds. Mad Max Tour out of Bath to Stonehenge, Avebury, Castle Combe, and Lacock is HIGHLY recommended. Rent car your last day in Bath and head north to the Cotswolds. Day 5 won't take all day - but always nice to have some unplanned time to just wander. Finally, don't miss the Churchill Museum and War Cabinet Rooms while in London - one of my favorite museums ever...
You only need the one night in Bath, so stay in Cotswolds starting with second night (similar to Mary's suggestion). Day 9 and 10, in my mind is enough for Lake District, I would not drop Chatsworth House for an extra day in Lake district, however when you are in Derbyshire (Chatsworth) think about a walk up Dovedale, pleasant walk up and around a little stream. Cotswolds dont need to be so structured. I would stay at one place in Cotswolds and each morning drive in a different direstion, its small compact area, so there is time to turn or stop on a whim, and go back to favorite sights. I endorse York and the steam train would be fun. Or the Yorkshire moors are a great place to drive around. Some very pleasant little villages Pity you dont have enough time to see much (any) of London. (Unless you have done London, I would skip Windsor and do London). Sounds like a great trip. (and I mean it). Other places in Cotswolds Burford, Compton Wynyates (house), Blenheim and Woodstock, Chedworth Roman Villa, Stow on Wold.
OK...revisions! I took out a couple of things, and shuffled London to the end. Does this look better? Day 1: Get into Heathrow 7:30am - travel to Bath - spend afternoon seeing Bath and walking off jet lag Day 2, 3, & 4: Cotswolds, Oxford Day 5: Travel north to Lake District, some looking about Days 6 & 7: Lake District, particularly Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth sites Day 8: Travel over to Yorkshire, look about as time allows (Thirsk - James Herriot, Eden Camp) Day 9: York Day 10: York/Whitby Day 11: Train to London, bus or walking tour Day 12: London Day 13: Windsor
Day 14: Leave Heathrow 10am
Mary, Looking good! I'm really envious of the Whitby part. Try to read "The Whitby Witches" by Robin Jarvis before you go. Sort of grown up childrens book. It's what made a friend of mine want to go to Whitby...and so we did. Nothing you can do about it, but I'm not envious about the 10a departure from LHR. You have have a couple days where you have to make some distance. Especially going to the Lake District. I like to avoid the M roads as much as possible in favour of a more scenic route. Which of course takes a little longer. When are you going?
I second Madmax for the Lacock, Castle Combe, Avebury, & Stonehenge. I've done both full day tours Madmax offers on different trips and found this one to be our trip's highlight, great tour, small group, and awesome guide make this a stand out memory in our families minds.
Looks like fun... I have spent a bit of time in England, and love it. I agree with only one night in Bath, or you might even stay in the Cotswolds and just go to Bath for the day... less moving of your stuff. I have also been to Whitby and it was great. I think there was a movie filmed there . Good choice to do London after, and I enjoyed Windsor. I also thought Cambridge was beautiful. Just driving around the Cotswolds and stopping at all the villages is great. There is also a little village called Greater Tew where they have redone a lot of the thatched cottages and they have also filmed a few movies there. I like staying in Chipping Campden. Have a wonderful trip.
