Hi, we're looking for a cottage or self-catering apartment ANYWHERE in England for one week at the beginning of June, but we do not want to rent a car! Has anyone ever had luck getting a feel for the English countryside without a car? Location or actual cottage recommendations welcome! Thank you!
I've given it some thought and I can't think of any part of the English countryside where a car is not essential.
Maybe you should think about the English seaside, possibly a resort surrounded by countryside like Scarborough or Cromer or Weymouth or Bornmouth. You'll find it easier to rent places at the seaside that are serviced by public transport.
Round here is countryside,a national park and an roughly hourly train service.

Hi Holly,
I agree with Al. I can't think of anywhere in the countryside where you could manage without a car. His suggestion of the seaside is excellent. I live in the Bournemouth area and you can get out of town and into the countryside very quickly by bus. The bus services getting out and about are pretty good, from Bournemouth you can get buses to Salisbury, Lymington, Wimborne and also over to Swanage. It's a lovely area!
You could stay on the Cotswold line of the train. Then you could get to other villages, Oxford, etc. and also use local buses.
The only thing is that you indicate you want to do this at the beginning of June which is rather soon!!!
