Cotswolds to Edinburgh

We are planning a trip from London to the Cotswolds this summer and would like to spend three days there in July. We also are then planning on traveling from the Cotswolds to Edinburgh to see the Military Tattoo. So, our questions are:
1. Which town would be best to travel to in the Cotswold with an eye toward traveling from that town to Edinburgh at the end of our Cotswold's stay?
2. What is the best way to get to the Cotswolds from London? Train or bus?
3. Do we have to go back to London to get to Edinburgh from the Cotswolds?

You can take a train from Paddington Station in London to Moreton in Marsh in the Cotswolds. Get a B&B there, from there you could take the local bus to different villages. You could get the 7:29am train from Morton in Marsh to Oxford, then take the 9:36am train to Edinburgh, it's a five hour trip. This train you do not have to change trains. There are trains that leave about every thirty minutes, most of them you would have to change trains once or twice. The train that leaves at 11:36am is also a train that you would not have to change trains. I hope this helps.

Dear Robin, this information is very helpful. We are going to do exactly as you suggest. Thank you so much.
