Cotswolds - Must see locations! Need help planning

Hello everyone! My boyfriend and I will be traveling to England this coming March for about 12 days. We have never been and are very excited to say the least! For a a couple of days in the middle of our trip, we plan to rent a car and drive around the Midlands (Cotswolds, etc.) to really try our best to see life how the locals see it. I'm talking little quaint cobblestone towns, tiny pubs, fields of sheep - peacefulness. What are some towns/areas of the Cotswolds that we definitely should drive through and/or stay in? Any ideas would be wonderful, we don't even know where to start. I knew you folks would have a great idea though :) Thanks in advance - Cheers!

Cotswolds are the epitome of what we all expect English villages and cottages to look like. Village pubs and fields of sheep are everywhereThe way to enjoy them best is to stay two or three nights in one of the villages and then just drive around. You can do some interesting walks along country lanes and even across fileds, but public transport is virtually non-existant, except for a very few villages Villages we visit over nd over again (and you can see all these in three days) include- Burford, Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Broadway, Stow on the Wold (great village square and hotels), Upper and Lower Slaughter, Upper and Lower Swell. Stow has the best (of a slim choice) bus service if you want to use them with walks. Chiping Camden is the largest village with a great main street. Others include Castle Combe (Dr Dolittle movie), Lacock (Harry Potter?). Almost on the edge of the Cotswolds are Blenheim Castle and its village of Woodstock. I am sure most of the above would be oon anyones list of recommended places. We also like the Cotswold rare Breeds Farm and Chedworth Roman Villa for a change of pace. If you are there on a weekend there are always farming shows and events, but then lodging can get a bit sticky You can find good hotels, inns and B&Bs in most of these villages, as well as little hamlets and roadside inns

I second much of what Brian says, I would stick to the area north of the A-40 as its all close and nice places to see. I know of a farm B&B in Stow that is a great little place if you need the info. Darren

Sarah, As you're planning to rent a Car, the first question to consider is your age, as some rental firms have restrictions on those under 25. Have you given any thought to driving on the "correct" side of the road, shifting a manual transmission with your left hand and of course "roundabouts"? In order to get good ideas on which towns to visit, you might have a look at the England Guidebook. Given your location, you could take a short drive to Edmonds one day, and use the free Library at ETBD (during business hours). All the current Guidebooks are provided. That would also give you an opportunity to speak with Rick's travel experts. When you're finished your research, pop across the street to the Irish Pub and have a pint! I found that Stow-On-The-Wold was a great "home base" for that area. If you'd prefer to stay in a Hotel, The Old Stocks is very comfortable. If you'd prefer a Hostel, there's a YHA/HI Hostel right next door to the Hotel. The Hotel offers free parking in the back (not sure about the Hostel). Having an HI membership will provide slightly cheaper rates and preferred booking. I believe they have private rooms (might be two beds). There are some nice Pubs and restaurants in Stow, so you could go out for a pint or a nice meal and not worry about driving. Some of the nearby towns you could visit are Upper and Lower Slaughter, Bourton-On-The-Water, Chipping Campden or Moreton-On-Marsh. You will see rolling green fields with sheep grazing (not sure what the weather will be like in March?). Don't forget to pack a good driving Map. I always take a GPS unit as well. Happy travels!

Have to agree with the villages that Brian and Ken told you. March is lambing season, so you will see lots of baby lambs. Have a good trip.
