I am planning on spending two nights in a town in the Cotswolds during a trip through England and Scotland. Which town would be the best central location? Having a train station and good walking routes nearby would be a plus.
Also, is it possible to walk along long stretches of the Cotswolds, or would it be easier to rent a car?
Train station: That narrows it down, because one of the few Cotswolds towns with a train station is Moreton-in-Marsh. The Cotswolds is one of the places in the UK where renting a car makes sense for a lot of travelers--because public transportation is a challenge there, it can be done, but not having a car there (unnecessarily) limits what you can do.If you have a car, you won't be so limited in your choice of where to sleep and could enjoy either Chipping Campden or Stow-on-the-Wold.
Caroline, as Kent said having a car in the Cotswolds is really the best. There are buses that goes to a few of the villages but, they don't go to some of the most smallest and quaint villages. I know there is a place in Bouton-on-the-Water where you can rent a car for a couple of days. Moreton-in-Marsh has the train station and it's where you can get a bus to some of the other villages. Let's say you stay in Bourton-on-the-Water which is fantastic, you would have to change buses in Moreton-in-Marsh to get to some of the villages.
Caroline, I rented a Car during my visit to the Cotswolds last fall, and used Stow-On-The-Wold as a "home base". I really enjoyed my stay and being able to tour the beautiful countryside and some of the small villages (Upper & Lower Slaughter, Bourton-On-The-Water, etc.).
If that sounds like an option that might work for you, be sure to get the full CDW package, and a GPS along with good Maps are definitely helpful.
Cheers!
Thank you all for your suggestions! And you've talked me into it! I'm going to go with Stow-on-the-Wold.
