Cotswold walks from Bath

We are taking the train to Bath and staying for a few days. We would like to walk the countryside outside of Bath but don't know how far away the "Cotswolds" is and if there are other walks in the area. We don't want to rent a car. Any suggestions ?

It is not the Cotswolds, but the Prior Park Landscape
Garden is a lovely walk just outside of Bath. You
can even take the longer hop on/off bus to get there
from Bath in less than half hour. The Park has beautiful gardens and some interesting architecture including the famous Palladian Bridge.

The geology around Bath is Jurassic limestone, the same as in the Cotswolds, and this is the stone used as building material. So you will see the same honey-coloured cottages around Bath that you would find further north in the Cotswolds. What you will not find s much near Bath are the small towns and villages like Stow, Burford or Broadway. Bath is the southern end of the long-distance footpath known as the Cotswold Way.

There is a lot of good scenery around Bath, and the Tourist centre will be able to give you details and sell you walking guides. Remember that this is quite hilly, so walking to Castle Combe would require stamina. Something more leisurely would be along the canal towpath to Bradford on Avon. There is a hard path, and good views over the Avon valley and attractive villages like Limpley Stoke and Avoncliff.

Dianne - Check with Mad Max Tours http://www.madmax.abel.co.uk/
They've been a little on the slow side recently and Maddie or one of the guides may have some info on a walking tour. Also, if their not full, they may be willing to drop you off in one of the villages (for a small fee) and then you can taxi back. Castle Combe was lovely as is Stow and Lacock - lots to choose from depending on your taste and fitness level. Some of the walking could be a bit much for some people.
Have a great trip!

I took a half day mini bus tour of the Cotswold's from Bath. Found the company on the internet and met the tour outside of one of the shops in Bath. Had a great time! The tour even included time to walk some of the fields where the small bus met up with us later.
