Hello, what are the best towns/villages in which to stay on the coasts of Cornwall? I am traveling as a couple. The trip is in mid-May 2014. I've been to England 6 times and lived in London, but I've never seen this beautiful region. We plan to rent a car, take hikes, etc. and visit historical places, pubs, etc. Thanks!
I love Mousehole. Partly I just love the name. I stayed at an inn (Can't remember the name) where Dylan Thomas spent his honeymoon. It was small and quiet and perfect for me. I rented a bike and went to the outdoor Greek theater by the sea and took a boat out to St. Michael's Mount. It was a lovely holiday.
Mousehole is really cute, but I love Mevagissey and Andy at the Buckingham House B&B. Our room looked out over the rooftops of the town to the sea. It's a great base for just about everywhere in Cornwall.
Not been to Mousehole, but can second Mevagissey. So quaint your teeth hurt just being there. We enjoyed it, my parents were also there on another trip and mentioned it as a highlight. Since you will have a car, it is well located to see other coastal areas.
Mousehole is quaint. Also nice are St. Ives and where we stayed, Falmouth.
I hiked/walked the Lizard Peninsula and would also vote for Falmouth, St Ives, St. Austell.....
I think all the towns and villages are great.
I would just look at a map of the Cornish Coast and pick several .......
I'd like to recommend Port Isaac, a quaint fishing village that is the site of the TV show, Doc Martin. We rented a fisherman's cottage about 75 yards from the harbor during July 2012. It is a place of incredible beauty and ruggedness. With a rental car, we used it as a base for Fowey, Megavissey, Padstow, Boscastle, Tintagel, Clovelly (actually in Devon), and a number of other places. Great hiking along the cliffs and the kind of place that within a week you feel like you know everyone. Check it out: http://www.portisaac-online.co.uk/
