We've been to Copenhagen twice (coming from Sweden). We've always turned our rental car in at Malmo and taken the train to Copenhagen. Now we are going the other way. Someone told me we should just rent a car at the Copenhagen airport and drive across the bridge to Sweden. Any downside to this? I have something sticking in my mind that says not to do this?? Thanks.
Where are you returning the car? There are usually foreign drop off fees if you drop a rental off in another country. But otherwise, I can't imagine any issues other than cost differences.
We could return the car right at the Copenhagen airport since we are then heading into Copenhagen. So, it sounds as if you are saying, Doug, that taking the car from Denmark to Sweden is not a problem or costly - it's just if it's dropped off in a different country that the cost comes in. Thanks.
You will have to weight convenience and cost. Renting a car in Malmö is usually a bit cheaper than in Copenhagen, maybe around $50 cheaper per week, but this can vary. If you rent a car in Copenhagen, you will have to pay the bridge toll to cross the bridge to Sweden. The toll is DKK 310 each way (approximately US$53). However, if you rent in Sweden, you will have to pay a train ticket from CPH airport to Sweden, which is DKK 84 per person each way (ie DKK336 for two persons round trip). To me, it seems more convenient to rent the car directly in Copenhagen instead of having to transport yourselves with luggage to Malmö, but renting the car in Sweden is cheaper altogether, when everything is factored in. Remember that the car has to be returned in the country where it is rented to avoid big drop-off charges.
