Copenhagen to Oslo

My husband and I will be traveling from Copenhagen to Oslo in June 2012 with our two children (ages 11 and 13). What is the best/fastest way between the two cities - train, plane, ferry? Thanks!

Hi Joanna, without doubt the fastest way from CPH to Oslo is by plane - about 1 hours flight. Being so ahead of time, you might already now be able to find inexpensive one-way airfares on either www.flysas.com or
www.norwegian.com However, one of the best way to travel from CPH to Oslo, and perhaps the one which will bring you nice memories, is by taking the overnight ferry crossing between the two cities. You can book from the ferry operator's own website www.dfds.com The ships are big and modern, and you get your own private cabin. You can consider this travel a mini cruise with lot's of activities on board for the whole family. The journey takes about 16 hours, leaves CPH around 5:00 pm, arriving next morning at 09:00 am in Oslo. Both the departure out of CPH along the Danish coast and the next morning sailing into the deep Oslo fjord are very scenic. Happy travel!

We did not take this particular ferry trip - we took the one from Stockholm to Helsinki, which I assume is functionally similar. But, especially traveling as a family hoping to make some lasting memories, I would highly recommend the ferry vs a flight, even if the ferry is more expensive (even after calculating that it is also your lodging for the night). The reason is simple. You will remember the ferry trip and you will instantly forget the plane. Even the time factor is actually in favor of the ferry. Even on a short plane trip you have to add two hours onto each end to deal with transport to/from the airport (plus it's costs) and waiting around the airport. This often occurs in the middle of the day when you would otherwise be sightseeing. On the ferry, you get on in the evening after most of your sightseeing is done for the day anyway, and arrive in the morning ready for another full day. Meanwhile, every non-sleeping moment on the ship is interesting and scenic, itself - like a bonus travel experience.

I've been by boat between the two. It was a long overnight (left about five arrived mid morning). Plane is the fastest and probably cheapest. Boat will be most fun for the kids - especially if it's your only boat trip in the area.
