We are flying into Copenhagen to visit family In Sweden at the end of June. Would there be an advantage to renting a car in Malmo rather than Copenhagen financially? Would you encourage public transportation to Malmo first then renting the car in Sweden since that is where the bulk of the driving will be or does it matter tax or country wise?

We always take the train to Malmo and rent the car there. It's very easy to do.

Car rental is usually cheaper in Sweden, but it can vary. Renting in Copenhagen Airport, you should know that the bridge toll is DKK 295 per car each way. Renting in Sweden, you should know that the train from Copenhagen Airport to Malmö takes 20 minutes and costs DKK 82 per person each way (half price for children), so depending on the number of persons in your party and on which deals you can find on car rental on either side, you can do the maths yourself!
