Copenhagen itinerary

Going to Copenhagen in early April and will be there for 8 days. We plan on going around Copenhagen, Roskilde, ?Odense, Hillerod, etc to see castles. I would appreciate any other advice as to what we should see. Also, would like some advice on Malmo vs. Helsingor Sweden. We were planning on going there too.. is it a day trip or overnight? Thanks for the help.

If that question mark goes with Roskilde, remove it immediately. The viking ship museum there is much better than Oslo, or anywhere else for that matter.

Helsingor beat Malmo, hands down; but why not do both in a one-day swing? The driving time for the whole loop is probably less than three hours.

Ribe would make a neat addition, maybe as an extension of the Odense excursion.

Tivoli!!!! Seriously. It is seriously wonderful, and it's very romantic at night. It's not at all like an American Disney-style "theme" park. It is enchanting. And it is a marvelous place for people-watching, since regular old Danish folk go there - it's not crowded with irritating tourists, in general. Also, excellent places to eat there!

And Roskilde is wonderful. The Viking ship museum rocks the house - excellent place. And the cathedral is one of my favorite places in Denmark. The Danes bury their kings and queens there - have been doing so since, I think, the 15th century - and it is decorated with supreme Gothic (death's heads, skulls) creepiness. A real gem.

Don't miss the Museum of the Danish Resistance and National Museum in Copenhagen. If you like modern art, the Louisiana Museum in Humlebaek, about 20 miles from Copenhagen, is a must-see, especially the sculpture garden. There are a number of open air museums; and you should try to see at least one. The one in Aarhus was our favorite, but there is a good one in or just outside Copenhagen and another just south of Odense.

Definitely go to Roskilde. The Viking Ship Museum is fabulous and the cathedral is magnificent. And the main shopping street in the town is lovely, too. Also the boat ride around the Copenhagen canals can be lovely if the weather is sunny and clear. I think it leaves from Nyhavn. We are going back there in April and I am thinking visiting Malmo cound be fun. Good luck -Jane
