We are planning to be in Copenhagen for two nights, and would like a nice, central place to stay. Any suggestions?
We stayed at two different hotels in Copenhagen. The Phoenix and the Opera. The Phoenix is more recently renovated. It's a couple of blocks north of Nyhaven (new harbor) and Kongens Nytorv (the King's new square) which are at one end of the Stroget (main walking mall), and about a block south of Amalienborg Palace. The Phoenix had among the best breakfasts I've had in Europe. The service was four-star in the sense that it was very good but very formal. The Opera, servicable but not recently renovated, is a block from Kongens Nytorv, Nyhaven and the Metro stop. The service was good (most interaction was with an American working there) and the breakfasts were very good. We paid $125 per night for a double including breakfasts at both (breakfasts normally cost extra in Copenhagen) during July and August. We had heard, and it seemed true in our case, that hotels might be the better deal in July and August. You can take the Metro from the airport to Kongens Nytorv in 15 minutes which is faster than the train to the central train station. The neighborhood around Kongens Nytorv is much nicer than the area around the train station. We had planned on staying at the Copenhagen Strand Hotel, which is a good four or five block walk east of Kongens Nytorv. When we arrived, it was full so they sent us to Phoenix (a little nicer sister hotel) for the same price. We only saw the lobby of the Strand but it seemed nice enough.
