Copenhagen, Denmark 3 day stay

Any suggestions on what to see in and near Copenhagen for 3 days? Also, places to stay for 2 adults and 1 child that is relatively inexpensive for that area? We will be there a few weeks before Christmas visiting a friend and then riding with him to Oslo where his real home is and not one bedroom apt that will not hold us. Any particular parts of the city to stay near or farther away from? Thanks for any information from experience that you have.

The Viking museum at Roskilde is not to be missed. It is in a very striking setting. One of the longships is next to a large window with a view down the fjord. You can almost sense them setting out on an expedition!

I loved Roskilde too - it's just a short train ride from Copenhagen. In Copenhagen, I also loved the natural history museum and the Danish Resistance Museum.

Copenhagen is pretty spread out with lots of wonderful architecture, so I found the hop on hop off bus tour to be benefical. There's lots of good walking. The harbor area of Nyhavn (sp?) is beautiful. Tivoli is a beautiful and wonderful amusement park, although the crowds on summer evenings were too much for me.

We stayed very close to Tivoli, which was an excellent location, except that it was very noisy at night, so if I went back I would look for a quieter location.

We also loved Fredericksborg castle, Dragor, and Frilandsmuseet (the open air museum).

Another vote for Roskilde. It's an easy day trip and also has a cathedral with all the royalty buried there. If Vikings don't interest you, Helsignor with the castle and quiant old town is amazing. If you love art, Louisiana is a must. As for Copenhagen, there is an abundance of things to do and since you will be visiting your friend I'm sure he will help guide you to the highlights and the things you are most interested in. Given your timing, strolling along the canals may not be high on your list...

One day included the train to Roskilde. We liked the Viking ship museum (not quite as good as expectations) and loved the Cathedral (well above our expectations). Once back in Copenhagen, walking the Stroget (including the Round Tower as part of Rick's self guided walk). Hanging out in Nyhaven finished the day. We tried for Tivoli but arrived at almost closing.

Another full day included Kronberg castle by train and a short walk. You can buy a useful, and cheap, souvenir here. When you walk the casemates, get an LED flashlight from the vending machine and explore. There are many messages written on the walls in reflective paint that would be invisible without the flashlight - a lot of fun finding the messages and reading them. Following the castle we took another train (called a private train but included on our Copenhagen card) up to Hornbaek beach for some time wading in the water and enjoying the sun - then trained back to Helsingor and looked around before heading back to Copenhagen.

For your third day, I would suggest the National Museum (starting at the oldest displays and working into the middle ages), Glyptotec, Rosenburg castle and boat tour from Nyhaven. Visit Tivoli from dusk until closing. At Tivoli, we ate at a restaurant that translates to "the Ditch". We went for a combo plate for our group, it included makings for smorebrod sandwiches. The herring was the absolute best I've ever tasted - not a hint of fishyness.

You can buy a 72 hour Copenhagen card at the information booth in the airport. All public transportation (including West to Roskilde and North to Hornbaek and Helsingor) as well as many admissions (including Tivoli) are included in the price.

I think you will find there is more to do in Copenhagen than you can accomplish in three days. We had more than five days and still missed a lot we would have liked to have seen.
