We are taking a 2 week trip to Ireland (Dublin/Dingle/Cork areas) next May-itinerary is not set in stone but will be flying in and out of Dublin. Have chosen to stay with train and bus travel only. Our adult son has an interest in cooking and would love to take a day cooking class sometime during our trip (not professional level). Does anyone have recommendations of cooking schools that are easy to travel to and aren't super expensive? thanks
Seamus O'Connell, head chef/owner of Ivory Tower Restaurant in Cork, offers day long cooking classes (approx. 8 hours). Ivory Tower is a great place to eat. If you ever caught any of Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations: Ireland" show on The Travel Channel, you'll see a segment was filmed with Seamus & Bourdain cooking at the restaurant as well as shopping in The English Market in Cork. You can find information at www.seamusoconnell.com about reserving a spot for one of his cookery lessons. Classes are small, so book well in advance.
Take a look at this blog by David Lebovitz, a food writer living in Paris. He recently posted several entries about food in Ireland including info on the Ballymaloe Cookery school. Website is www.davidlebovitz.com.
thanks so much for the suggestions, both sound like good possibilities. I'll email them to see what they'll have going on in May.
