Convince Me To Go To Ireland

Yeah, yeah, I know. Like saying: "Convince Me To Eat More Chocolate."

Here's the deal: I'm flying in and out of Heathrow in mid-September for two weeks in the UK. Initial plans included a train to Penzance and meandering around Cornwall and Devon with a rental car, or or train to Inverness and a similar meander around northern Scotland.

Now, I've lived in the UK and visited several times. But, I've never been to Ireland.

Here's my way of meandering with a car: Get a good map, Ordnance Survey or otherwise. Know where I'm going to stay for the night. Start driving in that general direction, stopping whenever I feel like. Avoid motorways and A roads. I don't mind getting lost; keep driving and you always arrrive someplace.

My incoming flight arrives at Heathrow at 8:25pm. Let's assume it's impractical to get to Ireland that night. (Is it?) So, what's the best way to get to Ireland the next morning? What are the tradeoffs vis-a-vis speed and cost?

I want to spend 3-4 nights in London before flying out, That leaves 7-8 days in Ireland.

The best way would be to take a budget flight. As to which one, you could check the Stansted or Gatwick airport websites to see who flies from where to where, and check the individual airlines for prices and schedules.

J.C.,

I'm not sure what your question is. Ireland is a great place to visit, and it's particularly a great place to do the type of "meandering" that you mentioned.

I can't imagine going from London to Ireland in any way other than by plane. Any other approach would basically eat up a whole extra day of your vacation.

No way,, you've done alot of UK already,, why not try something different and get onto continent... Why not France, or Spain,, or even the Netherlands. Branch out!

None of the no-frills airlines leave from Heathrow, so getting a CHEAP flight that evening might be problematical. You might get a major carrier from Heathrow to Dublin that evening. If you consider the alternatives, that could be the best bet. (Cheapest and most frequent flights would be with RYANAIR, with GATWICK the easiest place to start from.) Spend a couple of days in Dublin then rent a car. Direction? If you've not been there before, everywhere is great -- I would probably favour driving up the coast to Belfast though -- don't miss Strangford Loch.

Actually, Aer Lingus does fly out of Heathrow, though probably not that night. Right now they are showing flights for 5 euros or less (plus taxes/fees, of course) from Heathrow to Dublin in July (just randomly chose a date to check, but you could check for your dates).
