We are planning a trip where we will start in Norway, go to Denmark and finish up in Sweden. We will use ATMs as usual, but we might end up with leftover kroner after Norway or Denmark. Has anyone had experience with converting currencies among the Scandinavian countries? Do you take the same kind of hit as you would converting US dollars or Euros to any of the flavors of kroner?
Yep.
Bummer! I guess I'll have to pay more attention to how much I withdraw. It's doubtful that we will go back to any of the Scandinavian countries, so I won't need to keep a stash of kroner cash for the future like I do for Euros.
We've kept our Norwegian crowns for subsequent visits and with the weakening USD found the Kroners to be a good investment.
We did a 4 week house exchange in Denmark some years ago,and we took short trips to Norway and Sweden. As I recall, our strategy was to use up as much of the Norwegian and Swedish money as we could on our last day in each. Some Danish places, like big supermarkets, took foreign currency, euros as well, but I'm not sure about coins. I didn't even look at the exchange rate. It was accept it, or have the leftover cash. Not a biggie in the scheme of things.
It's only a mental problem; it won't bust the bank. Worst case, you'll misguess by a hundred bucks twice. More worst case, you'll lose ten bucks each time when you swap out. Twenty dollars ain't going to barely buy a pair of beers in Oslo.
You can use the extra cash on your last day to pay part of your hotel bill. Then use the odds and ends at duty-free to buy a souvenir or a drink.
