Concerned about Mid-August Heat in London

I have reserved at the Indigo Hotel near Paddington Station for the 2 nights we will be in London in mid-August but now see that their rooms are NOT air-conditioned while a nearby hotel which is not as well reviewed but still in top quarter does have AC. I am thinking I should go with that one even though I could lose a 20 per cent deposit. Sometimes I just get too hasty. Any thoughts?

Many hotels in Britain provide fans. Check with your hotel now and make a decision. Both ways you are gambling on the weather which no-one can predict

You are willing to give up your 20% deposit and a nicer place because it might get hot? London isn't known for high heat and humidity althought it can happen. But if you are the type that will be misreable if your room is over 68 then maybe it is worth it.

Well, I suppose it might be hot, it does occasionally get hot in London these days, but it's just as likely to be cold and wet. If it is hot, I'd ask the hotel for a fan, or go down the road and buy a cheap one.

A fan might be a good idea. We have been in London many times during August when the weather has been just perfect. However, once we were there when it was so incredibly hot, and we had no air conditioning in the hotel room. We were miserable all night. We should have thought of the fan. Now we always get a hotel with air conditioning just to be on the safe side.

Are you sure you will lose the 20% deposit? You would be giving them plenty of notice if you cancelled now.

As a died-in-the-wool cheapskate, I join the others who advise that you just buy a fan. I've been in London several times in August, and only once was it hot enough even to warrant that. That being said... the weather is MIGHTY weird these days. So if you really want to switch hotels, check to see about that deposit. Maybe the un A/C-ed hotel already owns some fans! And maybe the windows open...?

Could be in the 60's. Could be in the 80's. Could even be higher, if one of the increasingly frequent heat waves hits Europe. All depends on your personal comfort level.

John, Are you sure that your room does not have A/C? I stayed there last month. While it was not warm enough to use A/C, my room had A/C ... I was in an executive king and the website states, "All non-smoking king-size rooms at our boutique hotel in London Paddington tenders with amenities like individually controlled air-conditioning and heating". Even the description for the standard double states, "individually controlled heating and cooling for one to have a comfortable stay" I'd suggest you go to their website and check your room type (see below) or call the hotel and double check. http://www.hipaddington.com/relax/king.htm

I would not be too hasty to cancel and lose my 20 per cent deposit if I were you! Do as Laura suggests, and contact the hotel with your AC questions. Keep in mind also that during the hot part of the mid day, you will be away from your hotel, sightseeing, eating out, seeing a play, and may not return until well after after dark, when things have cooled down a lot anyway.

John, From their website: "All non-smoking king-size rooms at our boutique hotel in London Paddington tenders with amenities like individually controlled air-conditioning and heating, complimentary WiFi internet access, etc. etc. Hotel Indigo, a boutique hotel in London Paddington offers 4-star accommodation for a relaxing stay in London." Thanks for posting your question! Now I've gotten really interested in staying here after going to their website Laura posted! The place looks really comfy! I don't blame you for being concerned about the AC; in August especially!

John sounds like you found a great hotel. Yes- stick with your 75 degrees. London can get quite uncomfortably humid when the weather gets hot

Thanks for all of the wise advice. I want to go to that Hotel so I am sticking with it. We are not staying in King Size Executive suite so I don't think we will have A/C but the fan should be enough if necessary. I will watch weather reports just before we leave and see if we can upgrade if necessary.

Boy am I sheepish!!! From the Website: STANDARD DOUBLE
Each Standard Double Room at our boutique Hotel Indigo London-Paddington is designed beautifully. Special Hardwood and surface flooring are used throughout the hotel with guest rooms prepared with lavish bedding and gigantic photomurals. All rooms at our London Paddington Hotel are non-smoking and fully integrated with spa-inspired rain showers and other leisure facilities like complimentary WiFi high speed internet, fully interactive LCD flat screen TV. tea and coffeemaker tray, speaker phone with data port, mini bar, electronic door locks, double glazing, hair dryer, in-room safe, trouser press, individually controlled heating and cooling for one to have a comfortable stay. < http://www.hipaddington.com/relax/double.htm +++ I guess I was looking for the magic word "Air-Conditioning" which is probably a very North American term. So, let there be heat! No, I would still rather have pleasant 75 to 80.
